A New Year is Here! And the Excitement is Trying to Kill Me!

Hello loves!

In a perfect world, I would have done this post on January 1st instead of January 31st, but 2018 has decided to test me from the get go. It started on January 2nd when a stomach bug made its way into the house. But it gets better! *insert sarcasm here*

Here is how my January went this year:

  • The stomach bug hit 2 out of 3 people in the house (the hubs and the teen).
  • Not to be out done, I decided I would one up them and have an emergency appendectomy. Fun times.
  • The hubs had a fender bender. Nothing like last years total destruction of his Silverado, but his new truck had to be towed nonetheless.
  • So far, the nasty flu has taken down 2 out of 3 (again, the hubs and the teen). We’ll see if I can escape it or if my Lysol rampage and vitamin C bombs have helped me.

There are various other small, nuisances that plagued me, but minor compared to all the other things.

I was asked a couple of weeks ago how I keep my positive attitude in the face of all the turmoil that has rained down on me in 2018. I don’t really have an answer other than faith. I have faith that everything will work out okay.

There are some that still have it far worse than me. Everything I’ve gone through this month has been stressful and testing. But right now, I can type this post on a nice computer, I’m warm, I’m fed, and at this very moment, I feel fine (with this flu stuff, each day is a new adventure. I don’t count myself lucky just yet).

So, in spite of everything, I still feel very optimistic about this year. There are all sorts of projects and goals I’m working on in my writing career and my personal life. Here are a few I’m excited to share with you:

1 – Short Story Month. Starting in February, I’m going to post one of my short stories for a month. The first one I will be posting is a romantic short story (there are some sexy times, so just a fair warning, there is some heat here) called I Should be Getting Married…In the spirit of the month of love, I figured a romance one would be the most fun. Look for that to post on February 1st on the Short Story of the Month page.

2 – Edits on Shane & Emma’s story, tentatively called Trouble Me, are going well. I have a deadline with an editor and it’s approaching soon! I’ll keep you up on how that goes.

3 – My involvement with my local RWA chapter, Georgia Romance Writers, has stepped up. I’m the Galley Editor, our quarterly newsletter, but I’m also the Maggie Award of Excellence co-chair this year. I’m working with the lovely Diana A. Hicks. By the way, check out her debut novel coming out on February 7, 2018 called Love Over Lattes. It’s sexy and hot and just a fun read. I write the sexy South, she writes the sexy, Southwest, among other awesomeness.

4 – I have a super secret project that’s in its infant stages that I will call Project 101 mistakes. Stay tuned!

5 – After Shane & Emma, I will introduce you to Noah & Ava. Be on the look out for more updates on both books in my…

6 – Newsletter. I’m working on being better about bringing a newsletter to you guys this year. I’m still working out a schedule for it. But it will filled with all things writing and updates on my stories.

So that’s it for now. Lots of different irons in the fire. Sign up for my newsletter to keep informed of what I’ve got going on, short stories, goings on in the writing world.

This is how I stay positive. I keep moving forward.

I’ll leave you with a couple of quotes by Walt Disney that I love and keep me motivated:

All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.
It’s kind of fun to do the impossible.
We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.

What dreams are you pursuing, new paths you’re foraging, and having fun doing it? Leave me a note in the comments!

Write freely, love fearlessly, live intentionally.

NaNoWriMo Motivation – Day 8

Day 8: Last night after watching Shark Tank, my daughter asked me how those investors could give someone so much money without knowing whether or not they would get it back (in this case it was $700K). It seemed crazy to her. I told her that usually the bigger the risk, the bigger the reward and those investors were betting on the fact the business would work out.

Diving into Nano every year is a risk we all take. Will we finish? Will it be any good? Will we do it again next year? When will I have time to do this? All of these thoughts are a risk to our egos, our supply of time, our families, even our stories. But taking this risk each November is worth it to learn time management, consistency, overcoming fear, and just how bad we want to make this writing thing work.

So be willing to continue to take the risk. Even if you fall behind in the word count (I’m desperately behind now that I’ve injured myself! Doh!), keep going. The goal is to be consistent and finish something, regardless of the word count.

As Captain Barbossa said in Pirates of the Caribbean, “It’s more like guidelines.”

Now go write!

Today’s Count: 13,336 words

Happy Writing!

Today’s Motivation, August 4th – Timing is Everything

I love Gary Sinise. His quote is perfect. It takes hard work and persistence (among other things) to be successful in life, regardless of what your version may be. The timing of how it pays off is not in our control. But keeping our nose to the grindstone and working on that goal is completely up to us.

So own it. Do the time. Work hard. The timing of your success will follow.

And it will be when you least expect it.

Make it a great day!

Today’s Motivation, July 25th – Where You Start, Where You Finish

It’s called growth. No matter what you’re goals are in life, strive to grow. Presently, I’m a newbie to the writing world. But I don’t plan to stay that way, no matter how hard it is to get where I want to be. Where I am now is simply where I started. I relish where I am now though because it will make a great story when achieve my success! 🙂

Make it a great day!

Today’s Motivation, July 20th – It’s No Secret…

Everyone wants success, am I right? It can mean different things to different people, but at the end of the day, we all want to be successful.

That’s the easy part. Knowing we want it. Knowing the goal. But how we achieve that goal is where the rubber meets the road. Few have all the pieces needed to get there. Worse yet, some are not even sure what those pieces are. There’s no manual for it, no hack or secret handshake.

I will had one more item to Mr. Powell’s list: willingness. You have to be willing to not only learn from failure, but to be flexible, learn new things, and take chances. Without that, all the preparation, hard work, and failures can feel like your just spinning your wheels.

Whatever it is you want in life and whatever your definition of success might mean, give it everything you have.

Make it a great day!

Today’s Motivation, July 15th – Isn’t that Crazy?

Well, kids, today’s post isn’t really motivational. Just some fun Captain Sparrow. It’s all I got today.

It describes me perfectly! 🙂

Happy Friday! Make it a great day!

Today’s Motivation, July 14th – How Does Fear Motivate You?

“Terrible thing, to live in fear.”- Shawshank Redemption

Fear is one of the greatest motivators around. It can be productive or it can stop you in your tracks. It’s all in how you look at it. I know that over my lifetime I have passed on taking chances simply because I worried that I would look silly, say something wrong, make people angry or sad, fail at the task at hand. Who knows how many opportunities I passed up? I don’t dwell on it these days because I’ve learned to let go. Have faith.

These days I’m more likely to live and let live and be silly, be wrong, fail, and realize people will react the way they will regardless of what I do. I’m still a WIP on this, but compared to ten years ago, I’ve made tremendous strides. And if I slip into that mind set and worry about making a mistake, I just try to remember: what’s the worse that can happen? If the ones I hold dear to my heart are safe, healthy, and whole, then I’m good. And when I do screw up, I try again and learn from it. That’s really all we can do.

So, how does fear motivate you? Is it paralyzing to the point of missed opportunities? Or does it grab you by the neck and push you into taking that shot because you have nothing to lose?

Make it a great day!

Today’s Motivation, July 12th – It’s Enough

When I woke up this morning, I was aggravated with myself. Again. Never a fun way to start one’s day. But I’ve been doing it to myself for the last couple of weeks.

Why was I so aggravated? I have a time that I want to wake up each morning to do some writing before the rest of the day invades my time. But my family’s schedule has changed this summer, so my day ends later than it normally does and I can’t change that. So I end up in bed later and sleeping later. Not the way I normally like it.

But then I came across this quote and it made me pause. What was wrong with me? Why am I so hard on myself? I’m still productive, just not when I think I “should” be. And isn’t the point to be productive? This new schedule isn’t permanent anyway, just for a little while.

I think sometimes we can be our own worse enemies and it can stifle the very thing we are looking to achieve. I need to remind myself to be thankful I’m able to take any time to be productive on something I love. Because I find when I’m not thankful, I end up stressed and being counterproductive.

You are enough! Be thankful, be happy, be blessed.

Make it a great day!

Daily Motivation, June 28th – Be Weird

Some people call them dreams. I call them goals. I have many and they are lofty. They are things that in order to achieve them it will take sacrifice, hard work, determination, and a healthy dose of crazy. I know there are some that think I’m weird or a big dreamer. But I can SEE my goals in my head, I can visualize the hard work it will take to get there. I can also see the results.

I thrive on being weird and crazy. If I’m not being called either one of those, I know I need to double my efforts to stand out.

Think about it this way: There are over 7 billion people in this world. Why would I want to get lost in that herd of people?

Make it a great day!

Daily Motivation, June 23rd – Go Big or Go Home

In other words: GO BIG OR GO HOME!

Live life with purpose. We all have a purpose for being here, even if we don’t recognize it.

Whatever you do in life, find your purpose. It’s never too late, you’ll never be too old to find it. Don’t let the life you were given pass you by.

Make it a great day!
